What is Shabbat Shalom Havurah?

The word Havurah comes from the Hebrew word “haver” or “friend.” “Havurah” literally means “friendship,” “fellowship,” or “community.” Shabbat Shalom Havurah is not affiliated with any particular congregation or denomination of Judaism. It was created by a group of individuals and families who came together to explore many aspects of Judaism. Shabbat Shalom Havurah members share meaningful worship, life cycle celebrations, Jewish musical experiences, community Seders, holiday observances, and support in times of need.
Shabbat Shalom Havurah draws on the energy and ideas of all of its members. It offers creative and diverse experiences in Judaism. Havurah members include people of all backgrounds, ages, family configurations, walks of life and economic situations. “Shabbat Shalom Havurah” welcomes everyone, whatever their level of knowledge or observance.
In addition to providing a spiritual home to members of the Community at large, “Shabbat Shalom Havurah” provides religious experiences to persons with disabilities and their families. Our Havurah prepares Jewish young adults for Bar or Bat Mitzvah regardless of the extent of the individual’s disability. “Shabbat Shalom Havurah” is founded upon the belief that mitzvot (good deeds) and tzedakah (charity) form the basis for the passage to becoming a son or daughter of the commandments. To this end, our Havurah provides Bar and Bat Mitzvahs for individuals who may have otherwise been excluded from such events.
